I first spotted a MET-Rx bar at a gas station in northern Wisconsin. I was searching for a good protein bar for the lengthy road trip ahead of me. If you have ever wandered into a small town in Wisconsin with a name you cannot pronounce, you know very well your protein bar options are narrow at the local gas station.
MET-Rx is a protein bar that I could not bring myself to buy after seeing what was inside it. Specifically, I looked at the MET-Rx Big 100 Colossal Protein Bars - Super Cookie Crunch Meal Replacement Bar. Oh yeah, this is a meal replacement all right. Perhaps if your meal comprised candy bars. Let’s go through the pros and cons of these types of bars.
Macros
Not a very big fan of the macros for this bar. While the protein is pretty high at 32g, it also has nearly the same amount of sugar! 26g of sugar is not something I would deem "healthy". Because of the high amount of sugar in this protein bar, the calories in a single bar total a whopping 420.
420 calories to 32g protein is not ideal. You could achieve similar macros by making a protein smoothie with your favorite candy bar. It is also interesting to note that this protein bar has more calories than a quarter pounder at McDonald's. At the time of writing this, anyway.
Micros
Equally disappointed with the ingredients of this bar. Sugars, corn syrups and multiple oils in some of their worst forms, none of which are expeller pressed, are all in this bar nearing the top of the ingredients list. The ingredients in an ingredient list must be listed from highest to lowest based on how much of them are in the food. This means its a bad thing to see corn syrup listed higher up in the list.
Verdict: Stay Away In summary, I strongly recommend every person to stay away from this bar. I don’t believe that this bar has a place in a diet of any kind. There are far cleaner options both from a macro and micro standpoint. The MET-Rx protein bars have a terrible protein-calorie ratio and far too much sugar. If you disagree, you can buy it here on amazon.
